Introducing the Golden Approach!
Episode 000: Trailer
The point of the golden approach as I've been liking to call it, the point of this show, is to hopefully help inspire adopting a new mindset that the care for the guest should be equal to the care for the team and oneself.
We've all heard that change starts from within, right? And in my humble opinion, that's where we're going to have to grow from.
EPISODE OUTLINE
[00:02:42] What does the golden approach mean to me?
[00:04:00] What do I hope people will take away from the show?
[00:00:00] Aubrey: I don't believe that people typically quit jobs just because they're quote bad. I have personally experienced that people tend to quit jobs because of things like bad workplace conditions and bad benefits, but most often bad managers. Every time I know I've quit a job, I can pinpoint something being the motivating factor.
[00:00:24] Aubrey: My whole career, all I really wanted was a mentor, someone who saw past my bad habits and young nature for long-term potential. More often, though, I was just seen as too talkative and too opinionated, too quick to frustration, and many of my managers were just quick to yell and degrade me for the missteps, but rarely did I find someone ready to pause and reflect with me, to teach me how to better handle myself in those situations.
[00:00:52] Aubrey: In some ways, these things have gotten better since COVID. I think some in leadership roles are more self-aware. I think the people on this show are perfect examples, and they're more self-motivated to change. I also think staff feel more empowered to hold those around them accountable and less likely to let things get swept under the rug.
[00:01:10] Aubrey: Unfortunately, though, there are still so many stuck in the mud. They're too busy yelling things like, nobody wants to work anymore, and they don't take ownership for the part they're playing in perpetuating the toxicity of our industry. So this is my attempt, I guess, to call out the BS and be a part of the solution instead of the problem to share tangible ways others have already been able to enact change in hopes it's going to help motivate and guide others to do the same.
[00:01:36] Aubrey: My personal journey, I know has already been filled with mistakes. There's a couple examples throughout my career that I am not proud of. And I hope that the people that know those situations, know that, like, don't justify them. I find them to be big regrets of my career. But at the same time, as I said, I didn't really know what to do I just always seem to do it wrong.
[00:02:01] Aubrey: So I've tried to fill my time outside the industry with a lot of self reflection and quality therapy, and just a simple refusal to give up on the idea that it doesn't have to be like this. No one else needs to live like that, and I don't care how many times I'm told otherwise.
[00:02:22] Aubrey: And like many of you, I've spent the majority of my career focused on the guest. I have tried to be pretty much 100% available to provide for others, and that has been the point of my job. But it doesn't really leave anything to invest in our and even after that, there's really nothing left to invest in ourselves.
What does the golden approach mean to me?
[00:02:42] Aubrey: The point of the golden approach, as I've been liking to call it, the point of this show is to hopefully help inspire adopting a new mindset that the care for the guest should be equal to the care for the team and oneself. We've all heard that change starts from within, right? And in my humble opinion, that's where we're going to have to grow from.
[00:03:03] Aubrey: No one can force this industry to change. It's not going to happen with legislation or obligation for better social norms alone. I don't even know if a podcast is the right approach to make any difference at all. But despite the mood of the world, I do wholeheartedly believe that more often than not people just want to do good and live fulfilling lives. It's our instinct. We literally are driven by community. That's how we've survived. So I find this especially true of people in service roles. We don't do this because we're not capable of other things as people in society have believed and told me in my experience is because we're very often passionate giving humans driven to do something that can tangibly make people happy and in our own way makes the world better.
What do I hope people will take away from the show?
[00:04:00] Aubrey: We're a conglomeration of unique humans who go beyond differences, people who are willing to work hard and make sacrifices, and they were willing to do it for the benefit of others, not really knowing if it's going to pay off for themselves. So if you too want to make a difference in the service industry and make it just even a little bit better than you experienced it. I hope that you'll listen to this show and continue to get to know the Golden Approach over the whole season.
[00:04:21] Aubrey: We have a lot of really amazing interviews coming this way. We're going to talk about how to outgrow toxic habits that we've been taught by our chefs.
[00:04:31] Aubrey: We're going to talk about the importance of doing things with intention and not just because that's the way we've always done it. We're also going to talk about the importance of empathy and how we need to start as leaders, incorporating that into our leadership style, and giving permission to the rest of those around us, that that is the right approach we're going to talk about.
[00:04:53] Aubrey: How to build better boundaries with our clients and guests. That you don't just [00:05:00] have to do what the guest wants and the guest is always right, like we've been taught. It is okay to be open and honest with them about what we can meet and offer. And that that doesn't always mean that people are going to abandon your business.
[00:05:14] Aubrey: There's so many other things we're going to talk about this season. I don't want to give it all away, but we're going to cover a lot of range on sort of where are we right now. And how do we handle that? So we can move forward and make real change.
